Cell and Organ Transplantation, Reconstruction, and Regeneration

Organ failure is a significant driver of mortality in the US, as each organ plays a vital role in our bodily well-being. In these cases of failure, organ transplant or surgical reconstruction is often required to restore patient health, yet even following transplant or reconstructive surgery, patients are prone to a myriad of immunological and functional complications, including increased susceptibility to infection and adverse effects from anti-rejection therapeutics. The widespread prevalence of organ replacement complications motivates innovation toward more accessible organ replacement solutions as well as immunological strategies for reducing rejection. Some of our strategies to address these problems include cell transplantation via engineered bioresorbable matrices or scaffolds, development of pro-regenerative biomaterials that eliminate the need for donor cells and nanomaterials that modulate the immune response to induce tolerance rather than rejection of donor tissue.
